From Sketch to Lay-in

I finished laying in the figures for the “mob” painting today. It worked out well. I did end up adding one more figure than I had in my thumbnail sketch (below). Fortunately I was able to get the figures to work well together. So far it’s going smoothly.

  1. I do make a full size sketch but not on paper- directly on the canvas. I prefer it that way because once the sketch is resolved I don’t have to draw it all over again. At this stage I’m moving figures around changing poses and all that fun stuff. That is the only reason I draw it out on canvas first. I’m not using the grisaille method as most people think. I paint direct, on top of the drawing, as though it weren’t even there except as a placement marker.
